Weekend Recap: Four Teammates On The Same Podium?!

Six tournaments in two days — that’s a lot of jiu-jitsu. Get up to speed with the essential weekend recap.

Atos shut out the opposition in SF

Ever heard of four guys from the same team on one podium? Like a “Super Blue Blood Moon,” you’re more likely to witness the alignment of celestial bodies than four teammates claiming every medal in the same category.

The IBJJF San Francisco Open on Sunday saw the convergence of four Atos black belts who managed to completely shut out the opposition when it came to the absolute (openweight) division.

Keenan Cornelius, Gustavo Batista, Lucas Barbosa, and Rafael Vasconcelos were situated in opponent corners of the 12-man bracket. By each winning at least one match (Batista and Vasconcelos both had to win two) they closed out in the semifinals, deciding among themselves who gets which medal.

By winning the heavyweight division, Keenan took the double gold and moved from fourth to third in the IBJJF rankings.

Black / Adult / Male / Open Class

1 - Keenan Kai-James Cornelius - Atos Jiu-Jitsu

2 - Rafael Vasconcelos de Lima - Atos JJ International

3 - Gustavo Espindola Batista - Atos JJ USA

3 - Lucas Daniel Silva Barbosa - Atos Jiu-Jitsu

In other news, Atos athletes won double gold at male blue, purple, and brown belt AND female black belt!

• Medium-heavyweight Matheus Rodrigues won the blue belt honors (closing out with middleweight teammate Tainan Dalpra).

• Heavyweights Adam Bradley and Dom Bell claimed purple and brown, respectively.

• Angelica Galvao and Luiza Monteiro closed out the black belt adult female openweight after each winning their respective weight classes.

Mexico City Open

Quick results from the IBJJF Mexico City Winter International Open on Saturday:

• Fellipe Andrew of Zenith won double black belt gold. The heavyweight beat Nick Shrock to gold in the weight division and Sergio Rios in the absolute final.

• Claudia do Val of De la Riva JJ won two matches for double gold.

Possible last-minute entrants for Pans

This event was the last chance for athletes to get the necessary 20 points to qualify to compete at Pans, which takes place March 8-11 in Irvine, California. Two athletes stand out as having achieved this, meaning we may see their names appear on the list of entrants.

• Felipe Trovo, Romulo Barral’s new recruit at Gracie Barra Northridge, won gold in super-heavyweight and bronze in the absolute.

• Ribeiro jiu-jitsu ultra-heavyweight Casey Hellenberg won his division and also took bronze in the absolute.

UAEJJF roundup

There were no less than FOUR tournaments from the UAEJJF over the weekend, with events in Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, and Australia. Here are the notable results:

• In Switzerland, Jaime Canuto beat Adam Wardzinski in the absolute final via 2-2, 1-1 adv. and 0-1 penalty points.

• Wardzinski beat No. 1 UAEJJF-ranked black belt Igor Silva TWICE earlier Saturday, winning via submission in the weight division and then via 3-0 in the absolute semifinal.

• Lachlan Giles won the 85kg division in Sydney and qualified for the Abu Dhabi World Pro in April.

• In Canada, Matthew Leighton, a first-year black belt training out of Iowa, solidified his position as No. 1-ranked U.S. black belt by winning gold in the -110kg division.

• Alliance black belts won three of six divisions in Sao Paulo, with Isaque Bahiense winning 85kg gold, Renato Cardoso becoming the 94kg champ, and Fernando Reis capturing the -110kg title.
