A 17-year-old Could Be The Only Person To Double Grand Slam in 2018

Gabi Pessanha, a 17-year-old purple belt from Rio de Janeiro, could be the only person to achieve the difficult and elusive "double grand slam" in 2018.

The purple belt, who represents Infight Jiu-Jitsu and hails from the tough favela of Cidade de Deus, has won double gold (weight and absolute) at three of the four "majors" in 2018; Europeans, Pans, and now the Brazilian Nationals. To complete the task, she would need to win double gold at the World Championships.

Alliance black belt Tayane Porfirio achieved the double grand slam in 2017. Though they represent different teams, Porfirio and Pessanha have much in common. They both hail from the same region of Rio de Janeiro, and they both compete in the upper weight classes.
