Road To Gold: Marcus 'Buchecha' Almeida (Checkmat)

After two days of fierce competition at the IBJJF 2018 World Championships in Long Beach, California, Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida emerged victorious on Sunday and added another thrilling chapter to his story.

The Checkmat representative took home ultra-heavyweight gold after besting rival Joao Gabriel Rocha, Otavio Naltai, and Qatar BJJ BEAST Victor Honorio, and that was just in Buchecha's weight class. He also knocked off emerging monsters in the absolute division such as Nicholas Meregali and Felippe Andrew, showing that—at least for the time being—Buchecha is still the toughest man to beat in jiu-jitsu.

Of course, we would be remiss to not mention the fact that Buchecha turned down the chance to be a 12-time world champion. Instead, he let his good friend Leandro Lo, who was injured in his match with Mahamed Aly and unable to continue, take home the medal—an act of friendship that reminds us that jiu-jitsu is truly about more than competition and titles.
