DJ Jackson won $20,000 (AUD) after defeating Craig Jones in the final of BOA Super 8 under ADCC rules. Team Lloyd Irvin seems to be on fire lately, as Jackson again brings home gold to the Maryland based academy.

As expected, Jackson ran into Australia’s top grappler, Craig Jones, in the final and it was the Aussie’s strategy that ultimately cost him the match.

Under ADCC rules there are no points awarded in the first five minutes of competition, however pulling guard during this period is penalized, encouraging fighters to wrestle. Jones, predominately a guard player, elected to take the penalty and pulled guard off the bat, betting he’d be able to submit Jackson or earn some points come the 5-minute mark.

Jackson, who is known for his relentless pressure and unwavering base, wisely prevented Jones from getting underneath of him and enforcing the leg attack game. Jackson did not stall, however, and made continuous attempts to pass Jones’ guard all while keeping his hips low and allowing no room for Jones to work.

Jones did an excellent job of preventing the oncoming Jackson from passing his guard, however, via the knee shield and an active guard. At one point Jones even threatened a locked-in Kimura from guard, but the powerful Jackson was able to straighten his arm and thwart off the attack.

Ultimately, Jackson was able to take home the BOA Super 8 title and the $20k with a final score of 0-0 due to the penalty given to Jones for the initial guard pull.

Notable Matches

Thalison Soares had a dominant performance in his brown belt debut against Mikael Yahaya, quickly getting to the Australian’s back and eventually getting the tap via bow and arrow choke.
