Weekend Recap: Black Belts Cash Out at IBJJF NY BJJ Pro

The IBJJF New York BJJ Pro offered some solid cash prizes, and a couple of World champions came out for some dollar dollar bills y'all. It didn't all work out for them though.

2018 New York BJJ Pro

Jamil Hill and Mahamed Aly of TLI both made the quick trip up to Manhattan for the IBJJF New York BJJ Pro, and the 2018 black belt world champions were heavy favorites to win their divisions.

Jamil predictably rolled through the featherweight division, beating Alexandre Molinaro by submission and Thiago Macedo on advantages. He picked a nice check for $4,000 for the win, easy work in a division of only four people (where were the rest?).

Mahamed Aly stumbled in the ultra-heavyweight final, losing to Max Gimenis of GF Team 0-0, 10-0 adv. Yes, you read that correct – no points were scored, but Gimenis racked up 10 advantages. That's possibly the highest number of advantages we've ever seen without any points being put on the scoreboard. Aly is of course the 2018 super-heavyweight champ, while Gimenis lost in the opening round to ultra-heavyweight king Buchecha. So, credit to Gimenis for taking out a legit world champion en route to picking up his own giant-sized check.

In other action, Manuel Ribamar of Unity Jiu-Jitsu saw off Jon Satava of Marcelo Garcia in the middleweight final. They train less than a mile away from each other and faced off in Harlem– a true battle of New York.

Kaynan Duarte of Atos, who got his black belt at the most recent World Championships in early June, seems like he is trying to set a record as the most active competitor of the year. This brand new black belt has racked up 13 matches in four tournaments since getting promoted. Some people compete less than that in an entire year! Duarte beat two big names, out-pointing Tim Spriggs 4-0 via two sweeps in the opening round, and then beating Murilo Santana 2-0 thanks to a takedown. An impressive showing for the youngster, who is only 20 years old.
