AOJ Up-and-Comer Continues Win Streak
Not long after beating the reigning IBJJF World champion Jamil Hill, Johntha Alves of Atos gym Art of Jiu-Jitsu continues to prove he’s a special talent.
Still in Asia following his big win at Spyder in July Alves competed at the Copa Bull Terrier in Japan, winning double gold in the brown belt division. Impressively, he took it with five submissions in five matches.
Alves has been tearing up the competition scene since blue belt, largely due to the investment of the Mendes brothers and their Believe and Achieve program. Alves was scouted and brought to the U.S. by the World champion brothers, and Gui Mendes described him as one of the most promising talents he’s ever worked with.

GF Team’s newest black belt makes debut
Mauricio Oliveira, the brown belt World champion who was promoted to black belt in June, won double gold in his first competition as a black belt.
Based in Toledo, Ohio with Gutemberg Pereira, Dante Leon and a solid chunk of the GF Team squad, Oliveira competed in the IBJJF Chicago Open as a medium-heavyweight. Though the divisions were small, Oliveira came out on top.
At only 20 years of age Oliveira has long been tipped as one of the main names to keep an eye on from GF Team. This win serves to reinforce the opinion that he is going to be one of their main black belt representatives over the next few years.
