And The Winner Of Craig Jones versus Matheus Diniz Is….
The show boasted 25+ no-gi sn super fights, none as hotly anticipated as leglock specialist Craig Jones versus Marcelo Garcia all-star Matheus Diniz.
Figure 4 Promotions second edition of GrappleFest fest went down today in front of a raucous crowd in Liverpool, England. The show boasted 25+ no-gi submission only super fights, none as hotly anticipated as leglock specialist Craig Jones versus Marcelo Garcia all-star Matheus Diniz.
The main event saw Diniz start the match like a man possessed, rushing Jones' open guard like a bull for the opening minutes. Jones countered Diniz's passing attempts with his signature half-butterfly/ z-guard, hoping to elevate the MGA representative into a leg entanglement or sweep.
But the sub attempts simply never came.
Around the 12-minute mark, Jones put Diniz inside of his closed guard and considerably slowed the match down. While it's true that Jones was looking to either force a sweep or initiate a sub attempt, Diniz's solid base shut down any real attempts at either. The match played out like this for over ten minutes, only to see an open game return around the 3:30 mark. At this point though, exhausted and slippery, both athletes were simply unable to build any real attacks from a neutral position.
Though well-defended by Diniz, Jones was the only athlete to initiate any submission attempts at all, and therefore was awarded the decision victory after 20 minutes of battle.
