Flash and Fire: Renato Canuto Scores Submission Win at KASAI Super Series

Two weight KASAI Pro tournament champion Renato Canuto scored an impressive submission victory at the KASAI Super Series event on Saturday night.

The Checkmat high-flyer faced off with a fellow IBJJF No-Gi World champion in Marcio Andre. While Canuto won the title in 2017, Andre had won it the previous year.

This was the second time they had met in their career, with Andre earning a points win in a gi bout in their previous encounter.

Canuto probed Andre’s flexible and reactive guard with a series of pass attempts, mixing up directional changes with diving back takes. The end to the match came in the final minute of the initial 10-min round.

Sensing an opening for a leg lock entry Canuto was able to tangle up Andre’s legs with his own and force a tap via inverted heel hook.

Canuto is a KASAI regular and has enjoyed great success in this promotion, racking up a record of 8 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws. He won both the 155lb and 170lb 8-man tournaments, and holds wins over Vagner Rocha, Garry Tonon, Mansher Khera, Jason Rau and PJ Barch. Canuto’s sole loss on KASAI was via referee decision in a lackluster superfight with Eddie Cummings in early 2018.
