10th Planet defended their SUBVERSIV Pro Team title 4-1 against the Red Bowie All Stars, with Geo Martinez taking a big win over Joao Miyao in the most intriguing match.

SUBVERSIV is a Fight 2 Win production that aims to find the best team in no-gi submission grappling by pitting two teams of five members each against each other under the EBI rule set. Last weekend the defending champs, 10th Planet, took on five Red Bowie all-stars, a collection of the brand’s five most successful athletes. Instead of best of five, the team winner was determined by which team won three matches, first. After taking home the first three consecutive bouts the pro team title was already claimed by 10th Planet.

Eddie Bravo's 10th Planet team

By the end of the night 10th Planet retained their team title 4-1 over Red Bowie. Elvira Karppinen took home the most dominant victory of the night submitting Pati Fontes with a heel hook in under three minutes of their regulation time period.

Following that, the remaining three wins were earned in overtime. Did fighting for dominant positions from which to submit hurt the Red Bowie All-Stars? Or was it superior strategy from 10th Planet? There was a pattern of Red Bowie initiating combat and maintain aggression during regulation, forcing 10th Planet to play a more defensive game. The momentum consistently shifted in overtime rounds where 10th Planet proved themselves as escape artists, able to get out of danger in record times, while being able to control the dominant positions and submit, with much more success than team Red Bowie.

Ronaldo Jr (left) attempts to take down Kyle Chambers

The biggest upset of the night was Kyle Chamber’s (10th Planet) win over Ronaldo Junior (Red Bowie). Ronaldo demonstrated what he’s best known for: dynamic and effective passing, as well as an ability to control the trajectory of a fight, while Chambers displayed little to no answer. In the last minute Ronaldo implemented his pressure passing to attain mount, and attacking the arm, reaching for a last minute mounted triangle. The momentum of the match shifted as they moved into overtime. After three overtime rounds, Kyle Chambers absolutely dominated the escape times, while Ronaldo Junior struggled to break free. With a win by ride time, Kyle scored the third win for 10th Planet, successfully giving them the victory they needed to retain their SUBVERSIV Pro Team title.

Elvira gets the tap versus Pati Fontes

After upsets and over time victories some fans have been contesting the EBI rulesets, arguing that 10th Planet didn’t earn the dominant positions, but could only defend them. But, it was the rules, and a different format would have merited a different performance from the winning team, and Red Bowie’s only win was also made in overtime.

Although, 10th Planet quickly won the team title, the remaining two matches still fought for pride points. DJ Jackson took claimed the only victory for the Red Bowie all-stars, in a completely overwhelming match against 10th Planet’s Ruben Rivera. Jackson eventually won in overtime, by riding time.

Miyao goes after Martinez's foot

The last match was a battle between two submission snipers, Joao Miyao (Red Bowie) and Geo Martinez (10th Planet).  Many hate on IBJJF competitors for their lack of heel hook expertise, but Miyao proved them wrong showing up unafraid to exchange heels with the heel hook master himself, Geo Martinez. The match went into overtime ending after the first overtime round when Geo Martinez won by RNC, concluding the night with four wins for 10th Planet to Red Bowie’s one victory. Who is going to challenge the SUBVERSIV champs next?
