Multiple-time world champion Caio Terra has announced the closure of his San Jose gym due to the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

In an announcement on Instagram, the two-time IBJJF World champion and 10-time IBJJF World No-Gi champion revealed that a series of warnings from local health officials forced him to shutter his academy until further notice.

"Yesterday the county health officials came by and said this was our final warning," he wrote. "Moving forward we will be fined $5k per class per day.

"I talked to my lawyer and he said it does not look like we will win. It’s with a heavy heart to announce as of today the Caio Terra Academy is closed. We will re-evaluate where we are in 45 days and go from there. Thanks to everyone for the support, the dream isn’t over yet."

While some states have largely returned to normal, many gyms are still closed across the country.

There are no classes being offered at the Marcelo Garcia Academy in New York, and JT Torres received a shutdown notice from local health officials even though he was offering socially-distanced training as per local regulations.

Terra is maybe the most high-profile jiu-jitsu gym owner to announce the closure of his academy as a result of COVID-19.
