Romulo Barral Couldn't Refuse Berkut Match With Galvao
Romulo Barral says he had to accept his superfight with Andre Galvao at the upcoming Berkut BJJ event if he wanted to be known as one of the top no gi guys in the world.
“They are always offering me superfights, for me a superfight has to mean something to me.
“Me and Galvao have a good history of competing against each other, I couldn’t not accept.
“When they offered me Andre Galvao – you know, he’s the best no-gi guy right now – if I didn’t want to fight the best no gi guy of the last four, five years, it would be shame on me.
“We competed for the first time in 2004, I think – brown belt, quarter finals of the World Championships, and he beat me – then we competed again in 2009 or 2010, I won the fight, then again in 2012, I won again. And he won in 2013 and 2014, so it’s very even. He has one win ahead of me.
“He’s the man in no-gi, he proved that. He won the [ADCC] gold in England, then he beat Braulio Estima in a superfight, then he beat Cyborg, so he’s been doing really well.
“It’s hard to predict a fight against a tough competitor – it’s always great to fight him, he’s one of the best. We grew up competing together. I’m looking forward to a great match-up.”
