'Onnit Invitational Will Put Texas Jiu-Jitsu On The Map'
A brown belt from Gracie Humaita in Austin TX, Tommy McCay says he’s learned a lot about jiu-jitsu by preparing for the sub-only rules at the Onnit Invitational this Saturday.
“Usually I fight really hard to pass guard and hold side control for three seconds. Now that stuff’s out the window. I’ve got to find a limb and stay attached to it until the guy quits.”
McCay has also had to make a big shift by shedding the gi as he gets ready. “We’re primarily a gi school, so I’ve got to explore the no gi side of things. Training for this, I’ve improved a lot.”
Texas holds a growing and vibrant jiu-jitsu scene, and McCay thinks that the Onnit Invitational on Saturday Dec. 13 will help raise the profile even more.
“California and New York are the jiu-jitsu places in America. Now maybe we’ll put Texas on the map, too.”
