Fastest Absolute Final Sub In Worlds History!

Today we look back all the way to the openweight final match between Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros and Roberto "Roleta" Magalhaes at the 1999 IBJJF World Championship.

This was Comprido's black belt debut at the Worlds, and Roleta was known for having one of– if not THE– best guard games in the sport.

The match starts with a double guard pull, which was all part of the strategy. Everyone who was familiar with Roleta's game at that time knew this was going to happen.

Comprido pulled at the same time and quickly rose to his feet in order to start the match ahead with one advantage, following the advice of his coach Fernando Magrao.

Once on top, Comprido ended up in a somewhat modified single-leg X-guard position.

This lead to Roleta's left foot being exposed, which Comprido saw and quickly snagged up for a toehold.

Even though Comprido was not in the best leg position for the lock, this was such a shock for Roleta that he didn’t even try to defend it and was forced to tap.

This match will go down as the fastest absolute final in Worlds history after Comprido sealed the deal in only 17 seconds.
