Jake Shields Post F2W Interview; Danaher is 'Most Innovative Coach In The Sport'

Shields Credits Danaher With Heelhook Win

Gordon Ryan wasn't the only big winner by heel hook this weekend!

On Saturday night Cesar Gracie blackbelt, Jake Shields, used his top control and pressure to command most of his match with former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida. With short time left on the clock Shields unexpectedly dropped backwards for an inside heel hook and forced Machida to tap in what was undoubtedly the most exciting match of the night.

The former Strikeforce Middleweight champion has been making the rounds this year at many pro grappling shows. He fought AJ Agazarm at Polaris 3, Chris Lytle at Submission Underground and Lyoto Machida last weekend at the Muscle Pharm/ Fight to Win Charity event Submit Cancer. All three were very dominant performances.

Shields is known mostly as a grinder from his MMA days but the addition of heel hooks to his evolving game shows that the veteran grappler is still getting better and showing no signs of slowing down.

I jumped into the heel hook, i actually worked with John Danaher who’s a well known heel hook guy. His heel hooks are phenomenal. So some tricks I learned from him, I’m an amateur compared to his game, i just know a little tiny piece of it but I went out there and got the heel hook. I’d love to keep working with him. In my opinion he’s the most innovative guy in the sport right now.
