It's a good thing, then, that they're going to meet at Submission Underground 4 in Portland, OR, on May 14. As with any long-boiling grudge, this is a chance to settle things once and for all.

It all began with cans of energy drink and cups of coffee flying through the air at a UFC press conference. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz's beef spilled over into the two fighters' camps, of which Danis and Shields were members.

Shields says he doused Danis with coffee ("I got my target. He's butt-hurt about that," he told Submission Radio), but there won't be any beverages at hand when the two step into the SUG cage on May 14.

[Danis] is a great opponent," Shields said. "He's really skilled, he may be a little prick and mouthy and cocky, but I'm not going to knock his skills by any means. He's legit. He's one of the best in the world and it's exciting to fight him.
Until recently, Danis was training with Marcelo Garcia. Shields spends extended periods of time training with John Danaher at the Renzo Gracie academy in New York, a traditional rival of Garcia's gym.

Shields shares the mats with the likes of Garry Tonon, Gordon Ryan, Eddie Cummings, and a large number of talented grapplers and MMA fighters.

Though Danis is the talk of the jiu-jitsu world, Shields is not to be underestimated. He is a dangerous wrestler and a longtime jiu-jitsu black belt with 12 submission victories throughout his fighting career. An ADCC, SUG and Fight To Win veteran, Shields impressed with submission-only performances against Chris Lytle, Lyoto Machida, and AJ Agazarm.

Shields' match with Agazarm got heated to the point where slaps were exchanged. Danis is not exactly the shy and retiring type, meaning things could get heated between them. Shields doesn't have a problem with that.

He's not someone I seriously hate, but I do want to go out there and kick his ass," Shields said. "You don't want to lose to someone that cocky.
