Judge Rules Accused Killer Of Leandro Lo Can Continue Earning Police Salary
A court ruled that the military police officer charged with the death of Leandro Lo will be allowed to receive his salary while he is remanded in prison.
A Sãio Paulo court ruled that Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo — the defendant charged with the murder of eight time IBJJF world champion Leandro Lo — can continue to receive his salary while remanded in prison.
Velozo is a lieutenant of Brazil's military police force. He turned himself in hours after Lo was shot and killed at a night club in São Paulo in August 2022.
The accused killer has been detained in prison since August. Last week, Judge Marcio Ferraz Nunes, of the 16th Court of São Paulo, accepted Velozo's request to resume his salary.
Adriano Salles Vani, the lawyer for Lo's family, called the ruling "a slap in the face of the family, and of society," according to CNN Brasil.
Lo was shot in the head at a night club in the early morning hours of August 7, 2022. According to witnesses, Velozo provoked Lo and his friends, leading to a physical altercation. After the struggle, Velozo allegedly walked away before turning to shoot Lo.
The first hearing in Velozo's defense is scheduled for later this week on Thursday, March 24.
