Meet Jozef Chen, The B-Team Sensation Coming To AIGA

B-Team's Jozef Chen will be one of the select grapplers taking part in the second stage of AIGA quarterfinals, as he represents team Al Leone at 76kg in its Aug. 19-20 bid to qualify for December's finals. Jozef is one of grappling's most exciting young stars, as the B-Team prospect keeps building his name with exciting finishes and high placements in tough tournaments.

The 76kg division will also feature elite black belts like WNO Champion Dante Leon and Cole Abate. Chen will get a great opportunity to face off with one of them when Al Leone takes on Team Modolfo, and a victory could help cement himself as one of the top ADCC talents to watch coming into Trials season. This is the first of several team events Chen will have this year, as he rejoins B-Team for Quintet later in 2023.

Watch Jozef Win Gold At No-Gi Pans

Jozef has already had heaps of experience in this ruleset. The no-gi specialist placed third in the ADCC Oceanic and Asian Trials in 2022, falling to Al Leone teammate Kenta Iwamoto in the semifinals 2-0. Chen was busy last year, winning No-Gi Pans at purple belt middleweight and making the finals of the inaugural ADCC Open in Las Vegas. He also made his Tezos WNO debut, submitting Derek Rayfield with the first Z-lock in WNO history.

Chen specializes in guard play, including a strong ability to invert under opponents for leg entanglements and back takes, as well as finishing from the back. The Al Leone fighter continues to improve rapidly with his thoughtful approach to the game, so the spotlight he will get Aug. 19 and 20 will give us a good idea how far he has come since we saw Jozef last.
