Finals

Final match of the day, Gutemberg vs Scooby. Away we go. Scooby pulls closed guard. Gutemberg needs medical attention, he's been having issues with that leg this weekend. We're back, Gutemberg working on opening the guard from his feet. 3 minutes in and he finally does, now Pereira on top in X guard. He steps out and nearly passes, then settles into top half guard. He is up by an advantage 4 minutes in. He uses a tripod to force Scooby to turtle. He takes his time and works all the way to a choke - Scooby taps! Gutemberg has won both IBJJF gi majors in 2024.

Gabi Pessanha is out for her open class final against Izadora Cristina. She pulls and in 60 seconds gets the tap with a straight ankle lock. Izadora still down, that was a lot of power. 119-0 run, 11th straight major double gold.

Our last weight class final will be men's super-heavy, and it'll be Erich Munis forfeiting to his brother Anderson for the gold medal. Only the absolutes are left.

World finals rematch at heavyweight. In a back and forth early exchange, Fellipe Andrew is able to score the sweep but they reset on the feet after. Again Fellipe will pull and sweep, he's up 4-0. He's able to score another advantage from a near pass but can't. 30 seconds left and Machado won't be able to change the fate - Fellipe Andrew wins Pans after stumbling here last year.

Uanderson Ferreira and Mateus Rodriguez meet here in the Pan finals, whoever wins captures their biggest tournament win yet. First on the offense is Uanderson, his hip toss to the back scores him 4 early points! They take that away and give two advantages and restart on the feet. Things have slowed down here, Uanderson working in big moments and Mateus slowly grinding away with forward pressure. Under a minute left, Mateus pulls and Uanderson is around to the back again! He sinks in the choke and gets the tap with only three seconds left! That's his biggest tournament victory to date.

Andy/Mica time. Wow early on Mica jumps closed guard and gets to the side just like at Euros. He gets 6 from the exchange and is looking to finish! We're only 2 minutes in. He locks the rear triangle and gets the tap attacking the arm. Doing all this on a clearly busted ankle, a lot of toughness shown from Galvao.

Jackson Nagai and Natan Chueng are facing off to see who takes first at lightweight. This is a rematch from an IBJJF Super Fight last August, which Nagai won. Jackson pulls and wrestles up, but we are out of bounds and reset. Now Natan pulls, Jackson nearly passes and gets the first advantage. 3 minutes in and it's been Nagai's aggression from top and Chueng's stubborn reguarding skills. They reset and Nagai pulls and nearly sweeps early with a hook sweep from lasso, Meregali style. 5 minutes left, Nagai up 2 advantages. Natan nets his own advantage after wrestling up from guard. He's able to pull again, 9 seconds left and he is trailing by an advantage. Instead it's Jackson forcing him to turtle from a pass. They reset, Natan will need points and he can't get them. Jackson Nagai is the Pans champion!

Fabricio and Kennedy are out for their featherweight final. Kennedy playing guard and Fabricio trying to knee slide out. Kennedy wants the single leg, Fabricio rolls for a loop choke instead. Could be tight. Kennedy clears that choke then feeds the lapel single, Andrey rolls sideways to clear the grip and is back on top and up 2 advantages now. Kennedy sweeps and Fabricio sits back to play his own open guard. Kennedy trying to sit around the guard and nets an advantage for a good long step. Fabricio wrestles up, does get two points, but Kennedy is immediately rolling to the back - and so is Fabricio! Incredibly technical match. Andrey is up by an advantage with 90 seconds left. Kennedy wrestles up late to the back! In the closing seconds he will net two advantages to win the match and the gold medal.

Rooster finals for the men now, Thalison against Rodnei Barbosa. Thalison comes up from the double pull and gets to work with a body lock pass. He is deeeeeep into a knee slide with the underhook and Rodnei counters by moving to a modified deep half. Rodnei is ultimately able to survive and escape that deep passing position with about 2:30 left. He trails by 2 advantages and won't be able to move Thalison for the score. Soares is another champ for AOJ!

We will start the men's finals with ultra-heavy, so Gutemberg has a chance to recover for the open class finals. He will face Yatan Martins in a Euros finals rematch. Gutemberg pulls and is playing from closed guard, using the lapel. He passes a leg over into single leg X that he's combining with a lapel lasso. Berg gets a penalty for reaping so he is now trailing! He tries to sweep, can't, but is working on a lapel single leg. One minute left, Yatan being so heavy on top. Finally he manages to wrestle up but Yatan gets out of bounds in a hurry. That'll be it, Yatan wins the rematch off that singular penalty.

Here comes Gabi Pessanha, working on a winning streak of over 100 matches. She faces Mayara Custodio, a veteran black belt who has faced Gabi before. 2 minutes in, no score, still standing. Gabi finally pulls and Custodio works on an over/under pass - then double unders. 6 minutes left. Gabi finds the sweep, then comes up to turtle. She takes the back and locks up the finish. 118-0 streak, and another gold medal.

Heavyweight time, Izadora Silva is up first in the two double gold campaigns as she faces Thaynara Dias. Dias jumps to closed guard and Izadora stands and breaks it, then works to side control. Thaynara works hard to reguard, ends up turtled, still gave away the advantage. She rolls and gets to an outside ashi but eventually Izadora moves to 3/4 mount. She gets the foot out to open up the scoring with a 7 point lead. 3:30 left. She's working on an arm triangle. She will ride out the points win and is emotional after, clearly meant a lot to her.

There will be a closeout at medium-heavy and Ingridd Alves of DreamArt will win.

Thalyta Lima vs Vannessa Griffin now at middleweight. Thalyta times the pull with a leg grab to give herself a 2 point lead, Griffin in closed guard. She breaks that open and moves to double unders. We reset but with only a few minutes left we are back to the same situation - Griffin down 2 (and an advantage) and playing guard. Lima of Fratres works again to double unders, her pressure is on point today. One minute left. She forces Griffin to turtle. They reset on the feet and the match will end. Lima wins Pans after also winning Euros!

Janaina Maia is now going to try to push the AOJ streak to 4 in a row. She pulls early against Sabrina Rogerio, working from closed guard. She's trying to get the lapel working in her favor. After a lot of struggle she is switching between the lapel lasso and squid guard grip. One minute left, they may be headed to a 0-0 decision. We are, feels like Janaina did more but could be either way. They go with... Janaina! AOJ wins the first 4 women's weights.

Larissa Campos looking to make it 3/3 for AOJ to start things off, facing Maria Luiza. She starts the match with the sweep and takes the back! She scores points in bunches and is comfortably ahead. She will coast to a win on points, 12-0, to win her first major title at black belt.

Big match at light-feather, with the rematch from the big upset at Euros - Mayssa vs Jessica Caroline. Jessica pulls, Mayssa gets too aggressive on a pass attempt, and she's up 2-0. Jessica working from very safe grips as she plays from top, Mayssa being much more aggressive than usual from her open guard, throwing up loop chokes and more. Mayssa finds the crab ride when Jessica sits down, she makes her way to the back and scores, then submits! Mayssa puts an exclamation point on this rematch victory.

Adam Wardzinski, the returning Pan champion, is on the mat now and he is working hard from top to knee slide past the guard. He does, and mounts, Adam always brings such pressure. He adds more points with another pass and mount, and finishes it off with an armbar up 14-0. He's got Pedro Machado next.

Marcus Scooby, who is in the open class finals later today, is out now against Kjetil Lydvo. Lydvo pulls early to a Faria-style deep half, Scooby trying to tripod and pressure through it. Lydvo comes up and scores but Scooby sweeps right back to top position to even things. Again Lydvo finds that deep half position. Scooby balancing well but can't free himself and he gets swept again! Marcus stays patient but with time running low he opens up more. Lydvo passes, he will win the match! Big upset at ultra-heavy.

Fellipe Andrew up now at heavyweight for his first action of the weekend. On the other mat, Andy Murasaki is making quick work of his quarterfinals opponent. Could this be the weekend he takes down Mica? Two minutes left for Fellipe and his match is tied 2-2 as Carrozzino gives him trouble. In the final minute, he turns it on and scores the points he needed. 9 in the final minute to win by 9, champ stuff! He's into the semis.

Uanderson Ferreira out now against Manuel Ribamar in an interesting quarter. He goes up early on a takedown attempt that Ribamar gets out of bounds on, giving him the 2. Also on the mat is our other roosterweight semifinal. Through the first 3 minutes, Uanderson is up 2 points, 3 advantages, and a penalty - and drives Manuel through a Kingz barrier. 2 minutes left, there's a long interruption while they figure something out. I think Manuel's gi ripped and he was changing. We're back and Manuel can't score - Uanderson upsets the 1-seed!

Mica Galvao has taken the mat for his quarterfinal. His opponent Marcus Vinicius pulls and Mica is working to pass here low on the legs, down on his knees. They trade sweeps and Mica leads only 4-2 halfway through the match. It's the lasso guard giving him so much of an issue and Martins sweeps him again to tie things. 2:30 left and Mica comes up again for the 6-4 lead. They reset on the feet and Mica earns two more before another reset lets him get safely to closed guard. Mica wins a surprisingly close match 8-4.

They are giving Chueng almost no time off, he's already back out against Leo Cascao. About six minutes in, Natan counters an over/under pass with an omoplata. Saggioro stands up to clear but Chueng staying sticky. He eventually rolls and Natan is up by 2 with two minutes left. Less than a minute, Cascao wrestles up with a single leg, but still needs to finish. He can't, instead it's Natan ending up back on top and he will win the match.

They will now run some semifinals from rooster through lightweight, then run the quarters and semifinals of the bigger weights. Thalison is up first and he looks ultra-aggressive from top position early. He weaves his way past the guard qnd into knee on belly multiple times to go up 10-0. In a few more minutes, that's up to 20-0 in what is turning into a super dominant performance. More passing, more mounting, 27-0 and a triangle attempt leaves Soares finally on bottom. Doesn't matter, soon enough he's back on top to finish things out 29-0. What a performance. He's into the finals with a statement.

The Crazy Dog Show is up now as Fabricio Andrey takes the mat against Florian Bayili. Bayili pulls and Fabricio accepts the sweep for 2. He sweeps back and uses his passing to find the side control and score 3. The Hokage's loose passing is elite. Bayili manages to reguard. Fabricio's pace has slowed somewhat. He's up 5-2 and several advantages as they play in a modified single leg X position for the last part of this quarter. Fabricio advances but after he needs medical attention. Could be a cramp or could be an issue with the knee, it's unclear.

Alex Sodre now up against Kennedy Maciel in one of the most anticipated quarters. Two guys who can contend for World gold, and it's a Pan quarter! Kennedy comes up on the double pull for an early advantage. About three minutes in, Sodre finds a leg entanglement and scores his 2 for a sweep. 5 minutes left, Kennedy wrestles his way up into top position, points are tied again. Short time now, Sodre needs something and he is sprinting on bottom to find something. He gets a good look at a sweep, wrestles up, but only gets an advantage because they go out - still, that ties them up with six seconds. Judge's decision... Kennedy! Because of team affiliation, Isaac Doederlein will forfeit to Kennedy, so Maciel is into the finals already.

In the other quarterfinals, Roiter Lima (the 2 seed) is down by 2 points late to Bruno Cordeiro. He won't be able to score and that's our first upset of the day. Wow, speaking of firsts of the day, our first submission finish! Rodnei Barbosa locks up a wild dogbar from the bottom and gets the kneebar finish over Oziel Santos de Carvalho.
