The TCS London Marathon 2024 will bring more than 50,000 athletes of all ages and skill levels to England’s capital city on April 21. 

The race, which first was held in 1981, will take the competitors on a 26.2-mile journey across London, a route that hasn’t changed much since the inaugural edition. They’ll pass many famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, London Eye, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, home of the United Kingdom’s constitutional monarchy.

The London Marathon includes elite runners chasing world records, wheelchair racers and competitors who run in costume and race to raise money for charity. There’s even a mini-marathon for competitors under 17 years old.

The men’s winner at the 2023 London Marathon was 23-year-old Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya, who set the course record of 2:01:25. It was the second-fastest marathon in history, just shy of the 2:01:09 world record (at the time), held by four-time London Marathon winner Eliud Kipchoge, also from Kenya.

Kiptum went on to set the world record six months later with his win at the 2023 Chicago Marathon (2:00:35), but his career was cut short in February 2024 when he and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a car accident at home in Kenya.  

The women’s winner at the London Marathon in 2023 was Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who completed the race in 2:18:33. She previously claimed gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter events.

Competition on the day of the 2024 London Marathon will take place in waves, or staggered start times. 

Local coverage by BBC, the host broadcaster, will begin at 8:30 a.m. local time (3:30 a.m. Eastern).
