The 2025 European Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship begins on Friday, Jan. 17. Here's what to know about the IBJJF point system.

The 2025 IBJJF Euros begin on Jan. 17, kicking off action in Lisbon, Portugal. 

Friday will mark the first night of a week of action on the mats, with matches until Saturday, Jan. 25.

White belts will be the first to take action on Friday night, with black belts facing off on the following Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25.

As one of the largest competitions in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, here’s what to know about how the IBJJF scores matches and gives out points.

How Does The 2025 IBJJF Euros Point System Work?

  • Takedown - 2 points
    • A takedown occurs when a grappler forces their opponent to fall on their back, side or in a seated position and maintain control for three seconds.
  • Sweep - 2 points
    • A sweep occurs when a grappler who is on the bottom is able to take the opponent on the top and force them to the bottom and maintain control for three seconds.
  • Knee On Belly - 2 points
    • A knee on belly occurs when a grappler on top is able to place their knee onto the belly or chest area of their opponent for three seconds while they are on their back.
  • Guard Pass - 3 points
    • A guard pass occurs when a grappler on top is able to pass and break their opponents guard through their legs, maintaining control for three seconds.
  • Back Control - 4 points
    • Back control is when a grappler is able to control an opponent with their feet between the thighs for three seconds.
  • Mount - 4 points
    • A mount occurs when a grappler sits on their opponent's torso while facing the opponent, maintaining control for three seconds.
