Among the top-ranked black belts headed to the 2025 IBJJF Brazilian National Championship will be Brazil’s Gabi Pessanha in the Women’s Super Heavyweight division.

Pessanha is one of a handful of No. 1-ranked athletes set to compete at the 2025 event, which will be held the Ginásio Poliesportivo José Correa (José Correa Multi-Sport Gymnasium) in Sao Paulo, the competition’s home since 2013.

Also known simply as Brasileiro, the tournament is one of four Grand Slam events on the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation calendar. More than 7,000 competitors are expected to hit the mats in Brazil from April 26 through May 4.

Competitors are placed into divisions based on their ages and belt colors – white, blue, purple, brown and black – while each category features nine weight classes. Fans can watch all the action live on FloGrappling.

Each category at the event certainly will have its share of drama and storylines, but it traditionally is the top tier, the black belts, garnering much of the attention and discussion.

Since entries for the event already closed, we know who is expected to compete in each category, and that includes a handful of athletes ranked at the top of their respective weight classes in the latest official FloGrappling rankings.

The Women’s Super Heavyweight division will feature eight athletes overall, six of whom landed in the top 15 spots of the most recent women’s rankings – No. 1 Gabi Pessanha, No. 3 Tayane Porfirio, No. 9 Isa Lemos, No. 12 Kauany Ramos, No. 14 Mikaela Lima and No. 15 Maria Barbosa. All six are from Brazil.

As of April 15, there are eight women set to fight in this category:

    • Tayane Porfírio de Araújo
    • Marina Carraro Penedo
    • Isabely Generoso da Silva Lemos
    • Kauany Lorena Ramos Queiroz
    • Mikaela Barros de Lima
    • Gabrieli Pessanha de Souza Marinho
    • Maria Victoria Barboza de Santiago
    • Maria Eduarda de Oliveira Nascimento

The Women’s Super Heavyweight champion in 2024 was Pessanha, who defeated Yara Soares Do Nascimento.
