Adam Wardzinski closed the curtain on a legendary career in dramatic fashion at the 2025 IBJJF World Championships, winning his second consecutive black belt heavyweight world title before laying his belt on the mat and retiring from competition.

The moment came as a shock to broadcasters and the audience alike, as the dominant Polish BJJ star likely hangs up his gi for the last time.

The 34-year-old Polish star, representing CheckMat, defeated Leo Ferreira in the final, adding to a historic run that ends with an IBJJF Grand Slam in 2024-2025, including gold at IBJJF Worlds in 2024 and 2025, titles at the 2023 and 2025 Pan Championships and the 2024 and 2025 European Championships, and the 2024 IBJJF The Crown.

Wardziński began training at 18, but rose to international prominence—and dominance—over the last seven years. His recent run saw victories over elite names like Pedro Machado, Roberto Jimenez, Gustavo Batista, and Leo Ferreira, many by submission.

Europe’s greatest gi heavyweight, Wardziński’s retirement was as quiet as it was powerful—no words, just his black belt left on the mat at the Walter Pyramid.

Open Weight / Absolute Categories

IBJJF competitions feature open classes, sometimes called absolute divisions. These divisions, open to competitors in the blue, purple, brown and black belt ranks, allow athletes from different weight categories to compete together. The winner of this division is called the absolute champion.
