What's Happening In Jiu-Jitsu
-The IBJJF World Championship went down over the weekend, with champions crowned in every adult and juvenile division. The absolute champions from 2024 & 2025 both repeated, with Erich Munis and Gai Pessanha adding to their incredible resumes. Gabi won her 12th gi world championship and her sixth open class title, which is the most titles in women's black belt history and ties Buchecha's open class record. Full results here.
-Diego Pato won his fifth world title in men's light-feather, breaking the record held by Gui Mendes & Robson Moura, and retired from gi competition.
-Seif-Eddine Houmine won his second world title at men's black belt ultra-heavy and retired as well, laying down his belt.
-Alliance won both the men's and women's team titles, with Start Doing BJJ taking the juvenile title.
-There were new world champions in six divisions, including Cole Abate at men's feather. Cole has been one of FloGrappling's most covered athletes since he was just a kid and now finally wins his first gi black belt world gold medal.
-We had 11 repeat champions, including Mayssa Bastos who won her seventh consecutive world championship (all submissions) and Jansen Gomes who won his third title in four years.
-Tainan Dalpra won his middleweight division with an average match time of only 93.5 seconds, taking his fourth world title. It's already being hailed as one of the most dominant performances in history.
-Polaris returns this weekend with the biggest event in Irish grappling history, Polaris 37 - featuring a Squads matchup between Team BJJ Stars and Team Polaris. Also on the card will be #1 pound-for-pound Helena Crevar taking on one of Europe's top lightweights Amanda Schurtz. This all airs exclusively this Saturday on FloGrappling.
-BJJ Stars announced that BJJ Stars 19 will feature an absolute Masters tournament, as well as a few feature matches. Rafael Lovato Jr, Gregor Gracie, Horlando Monteiro, Jaime Canuto, and Rafael Formiga all stand out early as tournament participants capable of doing very well. Single matches will include Giovanna Carniero vs Livia Barasine and Patricky Pitbull vs Renato Moicano.
-BJJ Stars 19 will also feature WNO Youth Bracket champion James Ortiz taking on BJJ Stars qualifier winner Nicholas Vieira in a battle of future stars who have already proven themselves as standouts in the next generation.
-Nicholas Meregali will take on Felipe Pena in Spaten Fight Night 3, the promotion's first major jiu-jitsu match.
-Craig Jones confirmed that CJI 3 will not happen in 2026 after holding events in back to back years.
-LIJJN announced a few exciting matches for their upcoming card in August, which will be held at the World Trade Center. Fans should definitely check out Oliver Taza vs Sebastian Rodriguez, a feature middleweight bout that has two of the scrappiest dudes in the division.
-'Baby Shark' Diogo Reis announced the opening of his new academy, Agora Jiu-Jitsu. They will continue to operate in Jundai and focus on developing the next generation of great athletes.
-Former UFC heavyweight champions Fabricio Werdum and Junior dos Santos are set for a grappling match at Kings Championship on August 8th
-Owen Jones will step in to replace Kade Ruotolo and face Fabricio Andrey at ONE Fight Night 44. This is a rematch from before Owen even won ADCC Trials, so expect him to be hungry to prove his new level.
-IBJJF World No-Gi Champion Tommy Langaker opened up in a recent interview about his struggles with drug dependency and homelessness.
-ADCC Atlanta Open had a great event with a lot of notable names. Champions from the event include Joslyn Molina (double gold), Sebastian Attard, Tristan Sainz, Matt Masch, Alex Enriquez, and Bebe Junco.
-Mario Lopez was promoted to brown belt in BJJ after taking gold at the IBJJF Masters North American Championship
-Congratulations to two BJJ couples on their weddings, Ashlee Funegra & Mateo Cardona of AOJ got married AND Emily Leyva and Anthony Silva of Atos got married on the same day after IBJJF Worlds. Ashlee and Emily were the respective IBJJF women's light-feather world champions at black and brown belt, respectively.
