The 2019 ADCC World Championships delivered one of the most memorable weekends in submission grappling, bringing the sport’s biggest names to Anaheim, California.

From dominant champions to breakout stars, the tournament was packed with performances that helped shape the next era of ADCC.

Gordon Ryan stole the spotlight with a historic double-gold performance, while 21-year-old Kaynan Duarte announced himself as a force in the heavyweight division.

With the 2026 ADCC World Championships coming up Sept. 12-13 in Kraków, Poland, here’s a look back at five things to remember from ADCC 2019.

Where Was The 2019 ADCC World Championships?

The 2019 ADCC World Championships were held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, on Sept. 28-29, 2019.

Gordon Ryan's Double Gold Run

Gordon Ryan was one of the biggest stars in grappling at the 2019 ADCC Worlds, with becoming the first man at the event to iwn both the -99kg and Absolute divisions. Defeating Vinicius Gazola in the -99kg final before returning to the mat later in the Absolute bracket, beating Lachlan Giles and eventually Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida in the final. The win over Buchecha came by a penalty in overtime, which gave Ryan his second gold medal that weekend.

The Next Generation Makes Its Mark

21-year old Kaynan Duarte made a huge statement in the +99kg division. Duarte defeated veteran Yuri Simões before facing two-time ADCC champion Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida in the semifinals, where he earned a referee decision after a scoreless 15-minute battle. He proceeded to defeat Nick Rodriguez 3-0 in the final to claim goal. At the same time, Rodriguez, another young talent, made his own breathrough by reaching the final after beating established heavyweight names.
