Where Was The 2024 ADCC World Championship?
The 2024 ADCC World Championship took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Aug. 17-18, 2024.
Women’s Division Expands With Three Weight Classes
The 2024 ADCC World Championship marked a major turning point for women’s grappling. For the first time since 2007, ADCC expanded its women’s divisions beyond two weight classes, introducing -55kg, -65kg and +65kg. The move created more opportunities for elite female grapplers who had previously been forced to compete against larger opponents.
The tournament also brought back the Women’s Absolute division, giving the women’s field four opportunities to compete for ADCC gold. It was a significant step forward for the women’s side of the sport and helped make 2024 a landmark edition.
Kaynan Duarte Goes On A Submission Rampage
Kaynan Duarte turned the 2024 ADCC World Championship into his own highlight reel. The Atos standout stormed through the -99kg division and Men’s Absolute, winning both titles while going 7-for-8 in submissions. His run featured finishes over some of the sport’s toughest competitors, but the biggest statement came in the Absolute final. Duarte caught Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu with a guillotine, securing the victory and completing his double-gold performance. It was a historic tournament for Duarte and one of the most dominant submission runs in ADCC history.
Mica Galvão Completes The Super Grand Slam
Mica Galvão arrived in Las Vegas with one major piece missing from his résumé: an ADCC World Championship. He checked that box in style, defeating veteran Vagner Rocha by rear naked choke to claim the 77kg title and complete the elusive "Super Grand Slam."
Galvão became just the second athlete in jiu jitsu history to win all four major IBJJF titles and an ADCC World Championship in the same calendar year. He accomplished the feat at just 20 years old, joining Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles in the history books.
