Weekend Recap: Upsets, Ankle Locks & Cash Payouts

Never a dull moment these days in the world of grappling, let's dive in to some of the weekend's most talked about results.

SPYDER

In what was undoubtedly SPYDER’s most action packed event to date the 2019 qualifiers started off with a bang in Seoul, South Korea. While the buzz has been centered around the upstart black belt Levi Jones-Leary it was a brown belt that ended up stealing the show.

Matheus Lutes surprised a loaded bracket full of top black belts and became the top qualifier for the championship later this year.

Also taking home a gold medal was under dog Tim Spriggs. Spriggs has recently rededicated to competition and the results are rolling in for the no-gi World Champion.

Los Angeles BJJ Pro IBJJF Championship

One of our favorite competitions of the year that always brings out some top talent to compete for some solid cash prizes.

Split into four divisions with the winner getting $4,000 and the silver medalist getting $1,000 these matches had a little more on the line than just hometown pride.

Of course local powerhouses Atos represented well taking home three gold medals in the black belt divisions and a number of medals in the lower belts. Gustavo Batista continued his streak of dominance in Los Angeles. After his crushing win over Lucas Lepri at Europeans no one has been able to slow down Braguinha.

In other results, Kennedy Maciel bounced back with impressive wins over Joao Mendes and Thiago Macedo. Also GF Team’s Jaime Canuto took home middle weight gold by knocking out Otavio Sousa in the finals.

Sub Spectrum 7

Iowa based grappling promotion Sub Spectrum threw an event over the weekend that piqued our interest with some interesting matchups. I could watch Tex Johnson break ankles every weekend and sure enough he didn’t disappoint in the main event of Sub Spectrum 7.

The card also featured one of grappling’s busiest submission artists Keith Krikorian in a technical battle with John Battle.

IBJJF Houston Open

Gracie Barra had a big day down in Houston over the weekend winning the team title at the IBJJF Houston Open for the tenth time.

Gracie Barra has a large contingent in the area led by legendary black belt Draculino. His student, Lucas Valente had the most impressive performance of the day taking home gold in the black belt open class and closing out the middle weight finals.

Full results are here.

Fight 2 Win 103

In the main event of Houston's Fight 2 Win 103 it was all Gutemberg Pereira who is slowly turning into one of the promotion's biggest stars. Pereira finished his opponent his a mounted triangle and improves to 3-0 with Fight 2 Win.

One of the biggest moments of the night was the Fight 2 Win debut of jiu-jitsu legend Hannette Staack who took on Amanda Alequin in the night's co-main event. The match was back and forth but ultimately it was Staack who won the championship belt.
