As far back as the first UFC and even further, fans have always loved seeing how practitioners of different combat sports stack up against each other. Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu have lately been the two arts most commonly interacting with each other in competing with each other, such as this match between Gordon Ryan and Bo Nickal or Nicky Rod wrestling Pat Downey on FloWrestling.

So far these grappling matches have typically used hybrid rulesets though, and the end product just didn't deliver what fans expected. It was only a matter of time before an elite wrestler stepped up to face a jiu-jitsu athlete under a standard ruleset, and that wrestler is former University of Iowa icon Tony Ramos.

The match will go down at WNO: Gordon Ryan vs Matheus Diniz on Friday, October 2nd in Austin. This will be under standard WNO rules, 15 minutes of submission only action, with a judges decision should it go the distance.

Tony Ramos vs Nicky Ryan

Tony Ramos was a standout wrestler for the Iowa Hawkeyes, finishing his collegiate career with a 120-14 record. He was an NCAA champion in 2014, finished 2nd in 2013 and 3rd in 2012.

Tony was a legendary Hawkeye during his time, melting down Carver Hawkeye Arena on many occasions with his clutch performances.

Post college Tony embarked on a very successful freestyle career, representing Team USA at the 2014 world championships in Uzbekistan.

Tony was a two-time silver medalist at the World Cup and won the Paris Grand Prix in 2015 as well. He is currently retired from international competition, and coaching at the University of North Carolina.

This match will be under normal WNO submission only rules, a big challenge for Tony in his submission grappling debut. How he deals with the former ADCC trials champion Nicky Ryan on October 2nd is certainly going to be interesting for fans of both jiu-jitsu and wrestling.
