**Update David Garmo has filled in for his teammate Haisam Rida, who had to pull out of the match. Garmo will be making his second appearance on WNO, after losing to Couch's teammate, Andrew Wiltse, last year. Garmo and Couch have equally aggressive styles, which can sometimes border on reckless. That should provide a treat for grappling fans, as Garmo won't shy away from spamming guillotines and kneebars. This match is very likely to end in submission.

Fresh off a submission victory over Hunter Colvin, “The Hillbilly Hammer,” Jacob Couch is set to return to the WNO mats where he’ll take on WNO veteran Haisam Rida. The match is scheduled in the light heavyweight division, and will be on the undercard of WNO: Craig Jones vs Pedro Marinho on Friday, January 21 in Dallas, TX.

Pedigo Submission Fighting’s Couch made his WNO debut in February 2020, a decision loss to Elder Cruz. But Couch has found victories when they’ve mattered most; he took third in the 185 lb division at the WNO Championship in September, submitting Roberto Jimenez in the opening round.

Couch is 3-3 on the WNO mats with two submission victories and two submission losses. And he’s coming off of the most successful year of his career. He won No-Gi Worlds in the brown belt ranks in October, submitting all three of his opponents in less than three minutes of total match time. He took third at the ADCC North American Trials this year.

Couch will begin his 2022 season with a big challenge in Haisam Rida. Rida, of Assembly Jiu-Jitsu, has had two exciting submissions in his WNO career. His armbar victory over Miha Perhavec was the second-fastest submission in the history of WNO, and his face crank victory over Orlando Sanchez at the WNO Championship made him the first person to submit Big O in competition.

Rida’s only loss on the WNO mats was to the reigning heavyweight champion, Tim Spriggs. Rida is currently 4-1 on WNO, and his game is well suited to ensure that — whoever the winner — the match with Couch will not go to decision.

Couch is a guard player, and has developed a reputation as a leg locker. Rida has fallen to leg locks in the past, but will have opportunities to execute his rangey game against Couch, diving over the top, where his signature armbar is most effective.
