"Giant Slayer" Estevan Martinez vs Jon Calestine Coming To WNO On Jan 21

Martinez had a breakout year in 2021, earning a status as a fan favorite for his high-paced, wild style of wrestling and passing, and his unique submission attempts with which he won No-Gi Pans and No-Gi Worlds. Martinez finished his 2021 season with a 72% submission rate in no-gi matches, including three in his three matches at No-Gi Worlds, and two more submissions at the ADCC North American Trials.

Like Martinez, Calestine also had fantastic success at trials; he won each of his first three matches by submission in a combined time of one minute and 40 seconds.

Before trials, Calestine had taken a two-year hiatus from competition. But he’s always been recognized as a finisher. He’s particularly known for his leg lock pedigree; heel hooks account for 90% of Calestine’s career submission victories.

Calestine plays a calculated, systematic guard game, which will make for an interesting matchup against Martinez’ high-flying, often reckless-looking movement. The first on the main card at WNO: Jones vs Marinho, this match is sure to set the pace.
