This past weekend in Lake Charles, Louisiana at Submission Hunter Pro 79, Checkmat blackbelt Nic Schwan scored an electric straight ankle lock submission over UFC middleweight fighter Brendan Allen, capping off a card full of submission finishes. 

An amateur MMA fighter himself, Schwan defended an early single-leg takedown attempt before pulling guard and finding a leg entry to submit the blackbelt out of Sanford MMA in only :34 seconds. Coming off a victory via kneebar in his most recent MMA fight, Schwan scored the quickest tap on the card against a veteran grappler in Allen who has 12 submission victories throughout his promising MMA career, which includes two victories by rear naked choke in his last three fights.  

Kicking off blackbelt competition with a flare, Tyler Scialesi looked dominant in his performance against Jules Bruchez Jr. Scialesi achieved mount early after sweeping to side control from a leg entanglement. After gaining positional control, Scialesi cooked Bruchez Jr. until he found the mounted triangle choke, getting the finish shortly thereafter.  

Damion Oranday had a similarly slick finish in his bout versus Heath Henry. Oranday landed a beautiful kani-basami takedown and transitioned swiftly to the back. He wasted no time hunting the finish once on Henry’s back, securing the fight with a deep rear naked choke.

In the lone gi fight of the black belt division, Ryan Charles met brown belt Chris Thibodeaux.  After a guard pull, Charles landed a beautiful overhead sweep to mount before veering sideways with a baseball bat choke in hand, finally executing his hunt for the submission on the third deep attack.  

While the blackbelt matches provided an array of submissions, SHP 79 also featured a range of exciting colored belt matches from the kid's divisions to the adult pros. Gracie Barra’s Gavin Sonner undeniably had the fan-favorite submission of the night, quickly finishing a flying triangle choke in a no-gi bout versus Chris Thibodeaux.
