WATCH: Mahamed Aly Wins Big At 2017 European Championships
Mahammed Aly earned the biggest win of his young black belt career this weekend at the 2017 European Championships when he bested Lucio 'Lagarto' in dramatic fashion during the finals of the super heavyweight division. The standout medal chaser from Team Lloyd Irvin looked impressive all weekend long using his superior wrestling and guard retention to secure the #1 spot on this year’s podium.
During the absolute bracket Aly scored a win over Ultra Heavyweight Ricardo Evangelista in what was undoubtably the most exciting contest of the weekend. An early fight of the year contender, both big men darted all across the mat trading takedown attempts and sweeps. At one point the medics were called in, just an all around crazy match!

Mahamed only lost once over both days in the absolute division to the weekend’s biggest winner Leandro Lo. That match was closely contested but Aly ultimately was on the wrong side of a 3-0 score. The impressive performance was good enough for a 3rd place finish in the stacked open class.
No stranger to the European tournament Aly won both his division and the absolute bracket back in 2015 when he was still a brown belt. That year he dominated basically every tournament he attended, Worlds, American Nationals, No-Gi Worlds. Since arriving at black belt Aly's has had a mixed bag of results but it could be the 23 year old is just started to hit his stride.
