Alex Enriquez Wins 125lb Grand Prix Over Grace Gundrum
Enriquez submitted each of her three opponents before facing Gundrum in the final. Gundrum also submitted her first three opponents.
This weekend, eight women faced off in two round robins and a final for the 125lb Finishers strap and $2,000 in Bethlehem, PA. Atos black belt Alex Enriquez collected three quick subs in her pool, while 10th Planet black belt Grace Gundrum did the same in hers. The two young phenoms faced off in a cautious back and forth match, where Enriquez was able to win by ridetime.
Enriquez submitted her first three opponents all within the first two minutes of each match. She made quick work using wrestling, passing, and back control.
This was the first time Gundrum competed since the 2021 WNO championships, more than 15 months ago. Outside of overtime rounds, she stayed almost completely out of danger as she finessed her way to an outside heel hook, choi bar, and armbar in regulation. Gundrum started every match by pulling guard but didn’t hesitate to enter the legs or wrestle up.
Enriquez and Gundurm contribured to the high submission rate at the event. Ten of 13 matches in the Grand Prix ended in submission in regulation.
Besides the GP, there were five title matches. Two were won by submission in regulation. Seventeen year old brown belt Trinity Pun defended the women’s 145 lb belt, snagging an armbar from one of her best positions, closed guard. Brittany Elkin also had a dominant performance with crushing pressure and an armbar in regulation, retaining the 170 lb crown.
