IBJJF No-Gi Worlds Black Belt Finals Live Updates

The 2023 IBJJF World No-Gi Championships are happening now in Las Vegas, NV and the black belts kick off today, Friday December 8th and continuing into Saturday. We will be updating this page throughout the tournament with all the action so you can follow along with everything going on.

Finals Matches

Men's Black Belt Absolute Final

Roosevelt Souza vs Roberto Jimenez

Things start hot, as any Roberto match usually does. Roberto runs around to north-south but Roosevelt shows off his dexterity by throwing his legs around for a back take and a very near armbar! He's up 6-0! Roberto escapes the armbar, escapes a follow up leg lock attempt, then scrambles his way to Roosevelt's back! Jimenez secures the choke, he gets the tap and is the open class champion in under 3 minutes!

Women's Black Belt Absolute Final

Ffion Davies vs Gabi McComb

The biggest match of the tournament on the women's side, Davies and McComb start with both hunting the takedown. Three minutes in, both have a penalty and Ffion decides to pull. McComb grabs onto a front headlock and uses it to nearly pass, advantage for her. Now she jumps to bottom, she is working on a triangle choke. She has it locked but Ffion has a hand inside so no true strangle yet. Five minutes left, if Ffion can escape she is likely down two advantages. Finally, she does get away and they are back on to the feet.

Ffion with a big shove out of bounds, she is the one pushing action but she needs points. She is working for a pinch headlock or side headlock, neither work as McComb keeps clearing. More penalties for both. Finally Ffion breaks through! She uses a two on one with some ashi waza to find the back, that's four points.

Ffion Davies secures the rear naked choke and she is the absolute champion, double gold for the Welsh grappling star!

Men's Super-Heavyweight Finals

Javier Saul Zaruski vs Vinicius Gazola

Last final before the absolute matches. Trator being his usual self and that means plenty of pinning, pressure, and passing. The MGA black belt leaves an arm out, there's a triangle, and Javier gets the tap! A run from out of nowhere to win the gold. Incredible finish from the young competitor, biggest win of his career so far.

Men's Heavyweight Finals

Elder Cruz vs Adam Wardzinski

An all-CheckMat final is kicking off but these are two scrappy dudes so expect a real final here. So far it's Elder working to pass the guard of Adam, but he can only secure an advantage for his efforts. Elder forces Adam to turtle again after getting a penalty and that nets him an advantage. Time expires and Elder wins! The young black belt is the no-gi champ at heavyweight in a stacked bracket.

Men's Medium-Heavyweight Finals

Ronaldo Junior vs David Garmo

There are penalties both ways early. Few minutes in, all hand fighting on the feet. Another penalty, both men have two. Ronaldo pulls but then stands up right after. One minute left. Decision coming, winner is Ronaldo Junior.

Men's Middleweight Finals

Michael Perez vs Tommy Langaker

Perez and Langaker coming up now. Pair of real scrappers in the finals. Double pull, Perez comes up, he will gain the advantage and Perez will fight from guard. Perez trying to manage from top but Tommy snakes his way back behind him! He is one of the best back takers in the game, he picks up his 4 and looks to be on his way. Perez working on his escapes, but Tommy keeping the threat up on the neck. Perez is finally able to reverse his way to top but it won't be enough. Tommy Langaker wins, his first IBJJF world gold medal! First ever Norwegian!

Men's Lightweight Finals

Lucas Valente vs Deandre Corbe

Battle of dynamic, flexible athletes here. Lucas picks up two advantages on near-sweeps, and given how tough he is to out-strategize that could be massive early. Corbe working from top, Valente in his guard. Valente finds a straight ankle lock, Corbe is countering with a heel hook, wild shoot out right now. Lucas spends about 90 seconds just eating an inside heel hook before Corbe ejects. They both get an advantage. Stoppage for something with Valente's nose, I think blood. We are back and it's a furious last minute but Corbe can't score. Lucas Valente is an IBJJF no-gi world champion!

Featherweight Finals

Diego Oliveira vs Gianni Grippo

Two defending world champions are facing off here, with Pato moving up to Grippo's weight. We're off and Pato pulls early, Grippo falls back to his guard, and Pato accepts top position and 2 points. Now he has a body lock and is trying to tight pass. He gets past the guard and scores! Pato on fire early, he adds 2 more and is up 7-0 with 4 minutes remaining. Gianni can't get anything going from bottom, Pato is really coming into his own here at the end of 2023. That's going to be enough to do it, Diego Oliveira adds no-gi world gold to his incredible run this year!

Men's Light-Featherweight Finals

Junny Ocasio vs Zach Kaina

A slow match early, with Junny advancing from a seated guard and Kaina mainly breaking connections and resetting. They give Kaina an advantage for hopping on a foot lock, so he now leads. Ocasio enters into the legs and is able to sit Kaina down but is unable to score meaningfully. Junny trying to find ways to an advantage but Kaina is shutting that down. Finally he scores off a near takedown, but that only evens it up. We end the match tied - it goes to decision. After a long deliberation, the judges award the world title to... Junny!

Men's Roosterweight Finals

Everton Teixeira vs Riki Yoshinaga

Everton scores early! He is able to sweep his way to top position and score a few advantages that put him in the driver's seat after three minutes. He is working hard, and nearly back steps his way from top into a heel hook twice. Riki trying to work from coyote guard but Everton keeps countering with back take and leg lock attempts. Riki is able to score with a leg lock attempt but he's way behind on advantages with a minute left. Now Everton scores back, he's up 4-2. Riki comes out on top one more time, but Everton holds on to win. After losing the brown belt World finals in the gi this year, he turns around and wins black belt no-gi!

Men's Ultra-Heavyweight Finals

Heikki Jussila vs Roosevelt Souza

The men's finals will start with Roosevelt, then go to Rooster, to provide him enough rest time before the absolute finals. About three minutes in, Roosevelt pulls and begins working off his back. From there, he is able to drag to the back and apply a face crank for a tap! He is a world champion, and potentially the double gold medalist for men's black belt.

Kendall Reusing vs Mikaela de Lima

Kendall and Mikaela will finish out the women's weight class finals. Kendall being the aggressor with her hand fighting, especially the underhook. Finally she is able to get into a knee pick that nets her 2 points and top position as de Lima turtles. In no time, she has both hooks, belly down. She's going to win with an armbar, Kendall Reusing is back on top after over a year off with injury!

Rafaela Guedes vs Andressa Cintra

Two serious heavy hitters here with Rafaela and Andressa. Andressa chooses to play from bottom position. Wow! In short order, she climbs up and secures the armbar. Rafaela fights it hard, but she is forced to tap. Andressa adds another world gold, two straight years all submissions!

Women's Medium-Heavyweight Finals

Salla Simola vs Elizabeth Mitrovic

Salla and Elizabeth take the mat and exchange early sweeps, things are knotted at 2. Nearing the halfway point now, Simola has closed guard and is up by an advantage and a penalty. Mitrovic steps over the closed guard to break it, but in the ensuing position it's Simola who is able to nearly snatch up an armbar - which nets another advantage. Finally Mitrovic breaks through with a pass attempt that ends in turtle to even the match on advantages - but she needs more because of a penalty. There's her hooks - she scores 4 to get a lead late. Elizabeth Mitrovic wins worlds, her first as a black belt at this event.

Women's Middleweight Finals

Gabi McComb vs Thamara Ferreira

The other half of the open final is now up, Gabi McComb taking on Thamara Ferreira. Thamara pulls to closed guard early and McComb eventually breaks free. As she is trying to pass she gets kicked in the nose and the match pauses while that gets looked at. Action resumes and this is the match so far - McComb passing and Ferreira playing guard. McComb wrestles up, she finds the leg but can't finish in bounds. Still, that is enough for a an advantage with two minutes left. McComb finds her way to a leg, builds up, and Ferreira pulls. They call nothing and McComb needs something more. She finds it! Breaks open the closed guard and goes right into a back take! Late 4 for her and that should ice things. She wins middleweight and will be back for the open soon.

Women's Lightweight Finals

Ffion Davies vs Amanda Bruse

Ffion takes the mat for her first final, this one at lightweight against Amanda Bruse. Ffion pulls and wrestles up to the back early! She has both hooks and is working across the face right now. Now she works to mount. After losing mount, Ffion passes right back, she is up 21-0 now in a dominant performance. Time will expire there, the ADCC champ adds another gold to her resume. We will see her soon in the open finals.

Women's Featherweight Finals

Alex Enriquez vs Adele Fornarino

Battle of Atos black belts here. Adele pulls to closed guard early and shoots a nice triangle attempt early, but Enriquez steps over and now they are in a scramble position, similar to an Iranian lift. Alex circles back around and snatches up a tight front headlock that has serious squeeze to it. Adele finally strikes with a wrestle up from her half guard but Enriquez is right back on her with an arm drag to the back! She can't secure both hooks but she is able to get her 2 back and put up some impactful advantages. 3 minutes left. She keeps working and Adele won't be able to score. Alex Enriquez, world champion!

Women's Light-Featherweight Finals

Tammi Musumeci vs Jessa Khan

It's PSF vs AOJ here in the finals with two of the most accomplished women currently competing in the world. There's an early snafu with Jessa's hair tie and we are back again. Jessa pulls and sweeps early and then drops right back into an ankle lock. After some really good back and forth action, Tammi changes everything with a pass right to mount using a chinstrap grip. Jessa recaptures the foot, but Tammi passes again for another 7. That turns things from an even match to a 14 point victory for Tammi, who is world champion again!

Women's Roosterweight Finals

Mayssa Bastos vs Mariana Rolszt

The first final takes the mat, in the adult lightest division of the event. Mayssa enters into a heel hook from top position and quickly gets the tap with a crazy Junny lock. She continues her reign on top of the women's jiu-jitsu world.

Day Two Live Blog

Women's finals will be starting soon, men's finals and open class to follow. At super-heavy, Javier Saul of Atos beats Vinicius Lessa and Heikki leads in his semifinal after Roosevelt collects the decision on his half.

The last heavyweight quarter will be Jurema vs Wardzinski. They are both CheckMat, interestingly. Vinicius Lessa is scoring tons of points in his quarter, he will be into the semifinal. Wardzinski sweeps directly to mount against Jurema, he snatches the arm triangle, and that will secure his place too.

There are late no-shows trickling in now, so today's rounds at black belt should be finishing up soon. Through 8 minutes, Roberto and Negromonte are still very even. I'd say a long day may be wearing some on Jimenez but he is the one pressing action the most. Roberto eventually wins by points, 2-0, which snaps his submission streak (but still earns him a spot in the semifinals at heavyweight against Elder).

Biel continues his hot streak and beats Igor Schneider to make the semifinals tomorrow. He will face Heikki next. Elder uses his punishing takedowns to rack up points on his way to the podium rounds. Negromonte takes the mat for his quarterfinal against Roberto Jimenez, who has been perfect today in his open class and weight - all submissions.

It's Javier Saul through to the quarterfinals at super-heavyweight. Roosevelt hits a beautiful armbar against Austin Baker. Adam Wardzinski is currently winning 26-0, seems like he has that one well in hand - and there's the tap. Javier Barter and Elder Cruz up in the heavyweight quarters.

Gabriel de Oliveira ('Biel') smothers Fellipe Trovo after scoring 15 points, super impressive from the ultra-heavyweight. Heikki goes to a 0-0 decision, but he wins on an advantage. Trator and Elionai Braz are also up, Trator picks up the heel hook win to advance through to the semis. Andressa beats Mota, she is into another World finals in her likely Hall of Fame career.

Men's heavyweights are starting to hit the mats. Luciana Mota and Andressa Cintra coming up, last women's match of the dayWow, David Garmo just submitted Francisco Lo! It was gnarly, the biggest win of David's career and he onto the podium rounds.

Francisco Lo is coming to mat 5 now, facing Lucas Valle. Ronaldo wins a decision to advance to the podium rounds tomorrow, he'll have Sebastian. Some confusion in Sean Yadimarco's match, he has a darce locked up, the ref stops it, but his opponent hadn't tapped so he is awarded 2 points and they restart. Francisco Lo wins with a triangle choke, he's through to the quarters where he will have David Garmo.

DreamArt's Rafael Paginini is into the semifinals at medium-heavy. Ronaldo and Castro are on the mat now, winner is on the podium. Roberto is back up, now at heavyweight against Ty Freeman and things are getting chippy after some hard collar ties from Freeman. Eventually Roberto finds the back, traps an arm, and gets the RNC.

Langaker survives a deep omoplata from Tarik to advance to another Worlds podium with a points victory, he will have Caloi tomorrow morning.

Men's Middleweight Semifinals

Tommy Langaker and Tarik Hopstock, two of Europe's finest, are facing off in the world quarters. Jacob Couch won't be competing, he withdraws from the heavyweight bracket and Jurema advances to the quarters. After a great back and forth match, Sebastian grabs a heel hook on Rene to pick up the finish and advance to the semifinals.

Back on the men's side, Rene Sousa will face Sebastian Rodriguez soon in the quarters after some no-shows. Gabriel Castro upsets Clay Mayfield with a win by advantages. Ronaldo Junior beats Oranday on a single advantage to advance.

Gabi McComb keeps her double gold hops alives by making the middleweight finals. Thamara Ferreira armbars Deise Leonanjo to punch her ticket to the other half of that matchup.

Women's Middleweight Finals

Rafaela Guedes shows off a new wrinkle to her game with a heel hook over Malyjasiak to send herself to the finals. Kendall returns to Worlds with a submission, an arm triangle, and she is back in the finals. Big for her, after over one year out.

Women's Super-Heavyweight Finals

Rene Sousa wins with a heel hook, Sebastian Rodriguez advances, as does David Garmo. Rafael Paginini wins over Angelo Claiborne in a good early round matchup with an arm-in guillotine. In the middleweight quarters, Jaime Canuto and Luiz Paulo are in a close one, with both securing a late advantage to send it to decision - and it goes to Paulo. He's got Perez next in the semifinals.

Amy Campo no-shows the bracket and Salla Simola advances to meet Elizabeth Mitrovic in the finals. Jansen Gomes also no-shows, and Ronaldo Junior advances to the next round opponent, Austin Oranday.

Women's Medium-Heavyweight Finals

Plenty of results coming in now. Michael Perez beats Kieran Kichuk with a nasty wrist lock and advances all the way to the semifinals (after Jon Blank has to withdraw). Fabio Caloi will join him on the podium after beating Matheus Ramos.

Elijah picks up some early advantages, including a couple near back take, but Tommy is staying really dangerous with his inversions and leg entanglements. Langaker finds the back and the RNC!

Amanda Bruse scores two early points and wins her way into the finals, she will take on Ffion Davies.

Middleweight is rolling with the women's upper-weights starting to trickle out. Matheus Ramos beats former world champ Johnny Tama. ADCC Trials champs Tommy Langaker and Elijah Dorsey are up on mat 7. Amanda Bruse and Julia Maele are up now, winner has Ffion in the lightweight finals.

Lucas Valente takes the mat against Leo Domingos in a lightweight quarter. In short order, he secures the kneebar and is onto the semifinals and day two. He will face Sathler next round. In the last lightweight quarter, Marcus Phelan and Danilo Soares are facing off. Luiz Paulo does it! The new Alliance athlete picks up the biggest win of his young career. Danilo also beats Phelan by toe hold in an exciting finish, he's onto the semifinals.

Ffion Davies is back on the mat, this time at lightweight in the semifinal after some no-shows. She is cruising early and will pick up the arm triangle win over Joanna Trino to keep her double gold hopes alive. Luis Paulo is taking on Johnatha Alves now and transitions straight from a pass to a back take and is up on advantages! Could be a big upset brewing.

Some people who are picking up their early wins include Marcus Phelan, Johnny Tama, and Michael Perez. Alex Enriquez takes on Raquel Ferreira da Silva and Enriquez gets the tap with 4 seconds left to advance to the world finals. Amanda Bruse wins at lightweight to advance to semifinals, where she has Julia Maele. Adele Fornarino locks up a wicked overhook armlock on Jessie Crane that gets the tap and sends her to the finals.

Women's Featherweight Finals

Alex Enriquez vs Adele Fornarino

Oliver Taza and Johnatha Alves are now on the mats in a WNO rematch, very first round. Crazy tournament. Johnatha eventually takes it on points after a back take blows the match open for him early. Jon Blank beats John Combs in another tough first round bout by heel hook.

Gi World Champion Jessa Khan wins two matches and puts herself in the finals. She may be able to win both IBJJF world golds in 2023. In her way, Tammi Musumeci.

Women's Light-Featherweight Finals

Tammi Musumeci vs Jessa Khan

Lucas Valente and No-Gi Pan champ Carlos Henrique take the mat, Valente enters into the legs early but Henrique is staying safe for now. Eventually Valente finds a heel hook in 50/50, it's nasty enough for the submission victory.

We keep working our way up as featherweights, lightweights, and middleweights are up. Defending world champion Gianni Grippo is on the mat against Penney, and he scores with a back take. Daniel Sathler is having the best day of his black belt career yet as he beats Richar Nogueira and is into the semifinals.

Featherweight Semifinals

Kennedy and Pato in the quarterfinals. This is the matchup where Kennedy got injured at ADCC. Kennedy scores some early advantages with foot lock attempts, showing little fear of Pato's best skill, but Pato scores with a near-submission when a heel hook rolls out of bounds. Pato picks up the win off that and a sweep, 6-2.

Kade Tsitos and Deandre Corbe are up in their quarterfinal. Campos and Richar are also taking the mat soon. After a deep heel hook attempt, Corbe hits a wild Suloev Stretch to win. Tsitos is limping, that was a nasty one. Corbe back on the podium.

Junny Ocasio punches his way through to the next round as the lighter weights are all bringing tons of action on the main mats. Zach Kaina is in a close one, 2x2-4x4, in his quarter, and wins by decision to make the podium

Men's Light-Featherweight Semifinals

Jasmine Rocha is out, so Jessie Crane will advance to the semifinals to face Adele Fornarino. Danny Maira has also pulled out so we are likely to get Kade Tsitos and Deandre Corbe today - sick match. Tammi Musumeci is into the light-feather finals.

Daniel Sathler of Atos and Max Hanson are on the mat now, Campos nearly taps Hanson with an anaconda but they roll out and he gets 2 points. That is enough for him to win, he picks up the upset over Hanson. He will have Richar Nogueira, who just upset Josh Cisneros by decision, in the next round.

Roosevelt gets it done early with a submission over Elder Cruz in the absolute semifinals using an outside heel hook in 64 seconds for the finish, and it will be him and Roberto Jimenez in the finals. Both semifinals ended with dramatic taps, so expect some fireworks in the finals.

Roberto Jimenez looks incredible today! He wins his absolute semifinal with another back take and rear triangle, he has all submissions into the open class final!

On the women's side, McComb beats Svendsen and it will be Gabi McComb vs Ffion Davies in the open class finals.

Helena goes 2-0 with two submissions to win gold at juvenile 2 blue belt heavyweight. In a battle of talented young athletes who are looking to break through, Kalel Nascimento submits Valor Boyer with an arm triangle at light-feather.

In the absolute, the men's podium has taken shape as Elder Cruz beats Barter on points and Vinicius Trator beats Jose Inacio by decision. The pairings in the semifinals will be;

Kennedy Maciel is making his return here after suffering a knee injury against Pato in ADCC 2022, on mat 9. In open class action, Ruffato and Svendsen are now on mat 7. Winner is in the final against Davies.

Wow! Zach Kaina takes out the 1 seed Bebeto Oliveira with a heel hook in round one. Big win for the young black belt. more upsets roll in with Tadiyah Daniforth beating Osamah Almarwai, the defending champion.

Franciso Lo and Roberto Jimenez on the mat in their quarter. Big match for these two young athletes. Also up now will be Elder and Barter. Roberto manages to blow open his match with a near-pass into a back take that he finishes with the choke. He is into the open class semifinals with all submissions.

Mayssa wins on advantages, 2-0, against Cherrier in one of her closest matches in a while. She's into another world final at black belt. Junny also wins on advantages in a match full of exchanges.

Helena Crevar is here and wins her first juvenile blue belt match with an early submission. Mia Funegra is also here rolling early with a submission win. The young blue belts are really impressing.

And we aren't waiting, the women's absolute semifinals are starting up already with Ffion vs Maria. Ffion scores first with a sweep to go up 2-0. Davies uses her knee cut to get a near pass but Malyjasiak reguards. Same knee cut, nearly mounts, nearly takes the back, but Maria keeps getting back into the legs. Still, Ffion scoring plenty of advantages here. Maria comes back with some submission attempts to make the match closer on advantages, but another near-mount from Davies nets her more. Ffion will take it, and punch her ticket to the open class final.

On the men's side, Roosevelt hand fights his way to a 2-0 win over Felipe Costa to become the first medalist in the black belt male absolute. Defending world champ Junny Ocasio also now is taking the mat, first round against Atos's Demian Balderrama. Mayssa is also now starting her semifinal against Faye Cherrier at rooster.

David Garmo and Javier Barter, Panama's best black belt, are scrapping early. Medaling in the absolute would be the biggest accomplishment of either of their careers. There's a lot of points on the board for both men, but it's Barter who ends up with the win by submission. He will have Elder Cruz in the quarterfinals.

IBJJF No-Gi Worlds Women's Absolute Semifinals

Roberto Jimenez is on fire! He just took out a top-15 ranked heavyweight by beating ADCC Trials champion Heikki Jussila. He took his back, locked the rear triangle, then got the arm lock. He will get Francisco Lo in the quarters.

Weight classes are all beginning to trickle out now as well. Ane Svendsen advances to the open class semifinals as well. Tammi Musumeci is here to claim another no-gi gold medal and starts out with a win where she takes the back early and is able to ride out to advance. Elder Cruz looks really impressive in passing the guard of Fellipe Trovo late to secure himself a spot in the absolute quarterfinals.

Things will kick off with the black belt absolutes on mats 4-9. Some of the early grapplers to watch are Ffion Davies first up on 9, Roberto Jimenez first up on 5, and Francisco Lo second up on 5.

Ffion gets to work early in her double gold campaign, racking up 18 points within the first few minutes before winning via armbar. She will be back up soon. Maria Malyjasiak wins her quarterfinal by submission, she is into the semifinals and an open class medalist.

Roberto takes the back of Jose Munoz and finishes with a choke, looking like his usual energetic self. Austin Oranday and David Garmo win their first matches and advance. Ffion is already back up, her early schedule is brutal - to keep advancing she has to win 3 of the first 4 matches set for Mat 9!

Francisco Lo defeats the larger Austin Baker to advance. Ffion has the one seed Mitrovic of Alliance, and scores a couple early advantages but can't stabilize position enough to score. Still, that's enough to advance, and Ffion will face Maria in the absolute semifinals soon.
