There are four events presented each year by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation that carry more weight than anything else on the jiu-jitsu calendar, and the first one already is here.

The European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2026 is scheduled for Jan. 15-24 in Lisbon, Portugal, and will attract thousands of athletes looking to kick off the new year with a memorable performance on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Performing at the first IBJJF Grand Slam event of the year can set the tone for season ahead, or it can simply give the competitors a gauge of where they rank among the best in the world with a clean slate ahead of them.

For fans who aren’t able to make the trip to Portugal, FloGrappling will be providing live coverage of the entire tournament on FloGrappling and the FloSports app, beginning Jan. 15 at 4:30 a.m. Eastern.

The European Championship 2026 sees the event return to the familiar city of Lisbon, which hosted the first 17 editions of the tournament. The inaugural event was held in 2004. In 2026, IBJJF Euros will take place at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas, which opened in 2010.

The competition has continued to grow in entries and prestige, stalled briefly by COVID-19 and the cancellation of the 2021 event.

The return of IBJJF Euros in 2022 included a move to Rome in 2022 and then Paris in 2023 and 2024. When the action moved back to Lisbon in 2025, the response was overwhelming, and it featured a record number of entries – more than 6,000 across five belt-based categories that are further divided by age and weight.

The premier category is the adult black belt division, and those matches are sure to fill the multipurpose facility. The main hall of the Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas has 2,100 seats and a capacity of 3,500, depending on the configuration.

One of the biggest traditions at IBJJF Euros benefits the fans – admission for spectators is free! The gesture helps create a noisy and intense atmosphere that is unlike any other in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

As a major championship, the tournament offers high ranking points, the strongest lineups, a benchmark for the start of the year and a chance for established and new stars to make an early statement.

The IBJJF Grand Slam is a collection of four major gi tournaments throughout the season that includes IBJJF Euros, the Pan Championships, Brazilian National Championships and the World Championships.
