The European Championship 2026 sees the event return to the familiar city of Lisbon, which hosted the first 17 editions of the tournament. The inaugural event was held in 2004. In 2026, IBJJF Euros will take place at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas, which opened in 2010.
The competition has continued to grow in entries and prestige, stalled briefly by COVID-19 and the cancellation of the 2021 event.
The return of IBJJF Euros in 2022 included a move to Rome in 2022 and then Paris in 2023 and 2024. When the action moved back to Lisbon in 2025, the response was overwhelming, and it featured a record number of entries – more than 6,000 across five belt-based categories that are further divided by age and weight.
The premier category is the adult black belt division, and those matches are sure to fill the multipurpose facility. The main hall of the Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas has 2,100 seats and a capacity of 3,500, depending on the configuration.
One of the biggest traditions at IBJJF Euros benefits the fans – admission for spectators is free! The gesture helps create a noisy and intense atmosphere that is unlike any other in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
As a major championship, the tournament offers high ranking points, the strongest lineups, a benchmark for the start of the year and a chance for established and new stars to make an early statement.
