Less than a month after the 2023 Braseliros, the jiu-jitsu world and the IBJJF is ready for its next set of major events as the calendar moves to the summer. 

The World Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship and the Master North American IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship begins on May 31 and ends on June 4 as some of the best grapplers in the world descend on Long Beach, Calif. and The Walter Pyramid.

2022 Lightweight Champ Tye Ruotolo Bumps Up To Middleweight For Worlds

The event already has some heat, as reigning absolute IBJJF World Champion Nicholas Meregali called out the future winner of the absolute title and challenged them to a high-stakes match. Meregali issued the challenge after he submitted Pedro Marinho at WNO 18. Victor Hugo, Kaynan Duarte, Gutemberg Pereira and Erich Munis — all of whom have defeated Meregali in previous matches — are the favorites to win the absolute title this year.

The match everyone is hoping for: Tye Ruotolo and Tainan Dalpra could meet in the middleweight division this year. Dalpra is a two-time world champ on the hunt for his second title, but 2022 lightweight champ Ruotolo is moving up on the chase for Dalpra's throne.

Master North American IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship Schedule 2023 

The Masters North American championship is scheduled for May 31. Brackets and match schedules will be released on May 30. 

The IBJJF Open Weight Categories

IBJJF competitions feature open classes, sometimes called absolute divisions. These divisions, open to medalists in the blue, purple, and brown ranks and general black belt competitors, allow athletes from different weight categories to compete together. The winner of this division is called the absolute champion.
