How Team Scoring Works At The IBJJF World Championships

The brackets are out for the 2023 IBJJF World Championships, but beyond all of the brackets is the bigger team race that hangs over every division. Which elite group of athletes will be able to call themselves the best team in the world? Squads like Atos, Dream Art, Alliance, Art of Jiu Jitsu, Checkmat, Gracie Barra, and more are sending deep rosters of elite grapplers and all of them want to win. Before the first action, get up to speed on how that team championship will be determined.

For every bracket contested, provided there are four or more athletes, there will be four medalists (gold, silver, and two bronze medals for the losers of the semifinals). Every medalist earns points that contribute to the overall total, with the breakdown as follows:

  • 1st place = 9 points
  • 2nd place = 3 points
  • 3rd place = 1 point

At the end, the highest point total for an academy wins outright. There are tie breaking criteria in the event of a tie. Should two or more academies finish with equal points, the criteria is as follows (if the first criteria is tied they will move to the second, and so on down the list)

  1. the team with the most champions will be considered the winner
  2. the team with the most silver medalists will be considered the winner
  3. the team with the most black belt champions
  4. the team with the most champions at adult brown belt
  5. the team with the most champions at adult purple belt
  6. the team with the most champions at adult blue belt
  7. the team with the most champions at juvenile 2 blue belt
  8. the team with the most champions at juvenile 1 blue belt
  9. the winner will be determined by random pick

The biggest factor to keep in mind for the team title is that it isn't only black belt results that are considered. The colored belt medalists all contribute points, so often the team title can be won (or lost) before the biggest names ever step foot on the mats. This is a true team championship and every part of the team is considered - not just the stars. Colored belt medals and black belt medals are weighted equally.

You can watch these incredible athletes as they all try to climb the mountain at the 2023 World Championships. Who will succeed and make their mark on jiu-jitsu history? Tune in June 1-4 to watch live only on FloGrappling.
