What's Happening In Jiu-Jitsu

-IBJJF No-Gi Pans went down on Long Island, NY, with Atos & Unity winning the adult team titles. Some of the most impressive performances at black belt adult include:

  • Roosevelt Sousa, who won double gold for the first time in his career
  • Marco Mendes, all submissions for his first major gold
  • Gabi Pessanha, who won double gold
  • Sarah Galvão, won her first major championship at middle
  • Ana Mayordomo, became the first Spanish grappler to win adult black belt
  • Pawel Jaworski, beat world champ Wallisson, won gold, and took absolute bronze
  • Vinicius Inacio, Mayssa Bastos, Julián Espinosa, and more all also turned in great performances, find out more here

-WNO 30 completed the 8-man Grand Prix bracket this week, with additions of Pat Shahgholi, Roberto Jimenez, and a local Pittsburgh qualifier. In addition to that, Sarah Galvão will face Trinity Pun & Owen Jones will face Gavin Corbe.

-Fabricio Andrey beat Eduardo Granzotto at ONE Fight Night 36, earning a decision win. This was a rematch from the IBJJF Worlds where Granzotto won by points. Fabricio is now 2-0 with the promotion.

-UFC BJJ 3 went down with a full 9 matches in the pit. Read all about it here. Standouts include

  • Carlos Henrique, who defended his promotional championship belt in a great match with Matheus Gabriel
  • Cassia Moura, who had a great performance against Alex Enriquez
  • Jansen Gomes, who used his wrestling and creativity to beat his rival Gustavo Batista in their first no-gi match
  • Mikey Musumeci, who won by submission in the main event - afterwards he called out João Miyao. Miyao was also in action, winning his master's division at IBJJF No-Gi Pans.
  • Ana Mayordomo & Andy Varela, who had great submissions on the undercard

-IBJJF's The Crown added more athletes for the upcoming invitational tournament, including Cole Abate, Elisabeth Clay, José Steve, Nolan Stuart, and Pedro Maia. Find a full running list here.

-IBJJF Open Round Up:

  • Lisbon Open
    • Shay Montague made a lowkey return after a knee injury. The 2023 brown belt world champ won gold at light-feather black belt.
    • Sweden's Josefine Modig took double gold at black belt, winning three matches.
  • Curitiba Open
    • The Sodre brothers, Alex and Diego, closed out in the finals of feather black belt
    • Featheweight Giovanah Oliveira of JFC Almeida JJ won double gold, winning five matches over the day
    • 2025 Pan Champ Maria Luiza of JFC Almeida JJ won black belt light in a tough three woman division
    • Standout colored belt champions included Rafael Gamba of Alliance, Kellyson Carlos of CheckMat, and Alanis Diniz of Fratres.

-Quintet 5 announced their final two teams. They are;

-UFC BJJ announced some matches for their next card, including a main event of Andrew Tackett vs TBD, William Tackett facing Ronaldo Junior, Aurelie Le Vern facing Raquel Canuto, and more.

-WNO veteran & AOJ orange belt Icaro Moreno won a JJWL blue belt division, finishing two matches by submission for gold.

What's Coming Up In BJJ

  • October 14-16th: UWW, the same organization that does freestyle and greco roman world wrestling in the Olympics, holds the world championships for their version of grappling - every match on FloGrappling
  • October 18th: Finishers Fall Open, airing live on FloGrappling, features some of the best in the region including Rene Sousa vs NIck Willey
  • October 19th: Main Character Jiu-jitsu returns to Miami. These guys always deliver on a wild night of grappling, if you haven't seen the show yet check it out.
