One Year Gone: A Timeline Of The Leandro Lo Trial One Year After His Death

On Aug. 7, 2022, Leandro Lo was shot and killed during a pagode show at Club Sírio in São Paulo. The 8-time IBJJF World Champion was one of the sport's most recognizable, accomplished, and beloved athletes. Fans, athletes, and coaches have all joined together to mourn to loss of the titan. Honors and tributes, including inclusion into the IBJJF Hall of Fame and the founding of the Instituto Leandro Lo, continue to praise the iconic athlete from around the globe.

The suspect, Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo, is currently on trial in Brazil for the crime. Here is a timeline of FloGrappling's reporting on Leandro since his death, with excerpts and links to original reporting done by Vitor Freitas.

August 7th, 2022

Leandro Lo was shot and killed early this morning at a club in São Paulo, according to an article on Globo1.

The eight-time IBJJF World Champion got into an argument at a party before being fatally shot.

Police have arrested the alleged shooter, Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo.

January 6th, 2023

A judge in São Paulo has scheduled an initial hearing in the murder trial of Leandro Lo for February 3, 2023.

The suspected assailant, Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo, turned himself into police hours after the shooting. He is a lieutenant in the military police force.

February 5th, 2023

The initial hearing in the Leandro Lo murder trial, originally scheduled for February 3, has been postponed for more than a month.

The court in São Paulo has rescheduled the hearing or a date seven weeks later: Friday, March 24.

As it stands, the opening trial will now occur more than seven months after Lo was shot and killed.

March 21st, 2023

A São Paulo court ruled that Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo — the defendant charged with the murder of eight time IBJJF world champion Leandro Lo — can continue to receive his salary while remanded in prison.

The accused killer has been detained in prison since August. Last week, Judge Marcio Ferraz Nunes, of the 16th Court of São Paulo, accepted Velozo's request to resume his salary.

Adriano Salles Vani, the lawyer for Lo's family, called the ruling "a slap in the face of the family, and of society," according to CNN Brasil.

Lo was shot in the head at a night club in the early morning hours of August 7, 2022. According to witnesses, Velozo provoked Lo and his friends, leading to a physical altercation. After the struggle, Velozo allegedly walked away before turning to shoot Lo.

May 11th, 2023

Today the IBJJF announced that it will induct Leandro Lo, 8-time black belt world champion, into the federation's Hall Of Fame at this year's World Championships - less than 10 months after the legendary black belt was killed.

The federation made the announcement on Lo's birthday. He would have turned 34.

July 19th, 2023

Henrique Veloso, the Brazilian military police officer accused of killing Leandro Lo, was indicted by a court in São Paulo and is set to face a jury trial. Henrique is to be tried for aggravated homicide by the jury court.

Approaching the one-year mark since the violent killing of Leandro Lo, the long awaited trial of the accused killer is now set to begin.

The court’s decision is subject to appeal with the São Paulo Court of Justice.
