News: Gordon Ryan enters the +99kg division

In an unprecedented move Gordon Ryan has been cleared by ADCC to compete in both the +99kg division and the superfight against Andre Galvao. Ryan won double gold in 2019, being crowned champion in both the -99kg and the absolute divisions.

Not content with just competing in the superfight against Galvao, Ryan successfully campaigned to be allowed to enter the weight division. This will see him make history. If Ryan wins, he will be the only American to have won four ADCC gold medals, and in four different weight divisions (-88kg in 2017, -99kg and absolute in 2019).

How competitors are selected for ADCC World Championships

There are three ways to compete at the ADCC World Championships: returning champions and podium finishers at the previous  world championships automatically qualify to return. You can either win one of the continental qualifying events (held in various locations around the world), or you receive an invitation.

The ADCC World Championships men's divisions feature 16 competitors, with eight qualified athletes, seven invitations, and the return of the defending ADCC champion. Women's divisions feature eight competitors, with four qualified athletes, the defending champion, and three invitations.
