The second major IBJJF tournament of the 2023 season is in the books. Nicholas Meregali and Tainan Dalpra were among the brightest stars to shine at Pans, but the tournament — the largest Pans in history — delivered action at every turn. Registration for the 2023 IBJJF Pans black belt open weight division has officially closed, meaning we now know which athletes will kick things off on Saturday morning in pursuit of the absolute title.

Atos standout super heavyweight Nico Maglicic locked up double gold in the brown belt divisions on the second day of the 2023 IBJJF Pan Championships, defeating four of his six opponents via submission and racking up points along the way. That marks Maglicic’s second and third Pans gold as a brown belt, he took absolute gold at the tournament in 2022 after earning silver in the category.

Stories of ups and downs in sports are commonplace. Doubts, injuries, and painful losses are a part of every athlete's path sooner or later. For Patrick Gaudio, a mysterious injury almost led him to hang up his gi and drop out of the competitive scene. A black belt since 2014, the 29-year old athlete managed to overcome the difficulties and stay active to step onto the IBJJF's mats on the Pan 2023 with a more polished game, full of confidence and hungry to find his best phase in the sport.

Even under the best of circumstances, being a student of jiu-jitsu is no walk in the park. There's no roadmap for success.
