Excited For Gi Season? Check Out All These Previews!

I’ve recently done a deep dive into the upcoming 2020 gi season, with 16 season previews about what to expect over the next few months. Gi season will kick off at Euros on January 20 and run straight through to Worlds at the end of May.

These articles in total are nearly 20,000 words of info on the gi jiu-jitsu scene. If you’re like me and looking forward to some gi action next week in Lisbon, check these out:

2020 Gi Season Is Around The Corner: Dates You Need To Know - Just a summary of what the big IBJJF gi tournaments are this year. When they are, where, etc.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Rooster - Mikey, Bruno, Thalison and a whole bunch of others make this the most exciting roosterweight division ever. This weight is the main event at Euros; check this out before that tournament.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Light-Feather - The Cicero Costha team has a monopoly at this weight, and it’s only getting stronger. There are legit challengers, though, and will Mikey go up in weight for Worlds?

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Feather - Matheus Gabriel stormed this division in his first year at black belt, winning Pans and Worlds. There are a ton of contenders here, some vets who have been close for a long time and might finally get it done at Worlds.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Light - Lepri is the king here, six-time Worlds champ and always flawless in the pyramid. But Levi beat him at Euros, Johnatha Alves is coming, and you can’t forget Lucas Valente and Renato Canuto. How long can Lepri hold them off for?

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Middle - The deepest weight class at black belt in my opinion. Arges won it in 2019, Isaque in 2018. The top 15 is insane at this weight.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Medium-Heavyweight - Preguica is moving up in weight and it really opens things up here; check out the other contenders for the title at medium-heavy.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Heavyweight - Loaded weight. Kaynan won everything in 2019. But can Lo, Keenan or Preguica take him out?

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Super-Heavy - Nicholas ran wild at this weight in 2019, but Aly and Fellipe Andrew have had their day as well. It’s looking like it is Meregali’s division for now, but anything can happen.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Male Ultra-Heavy - Buchecha is the undisputed top dog here. But he’s lost to Joao Gabriel Rocha, and a new challenger has appeared in the form of Victor Hugo.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Female Rooster and Light-Feather - Mayssa has a firm grip on the roosterweight division, but a gang of world champs occupies a dangerous light-featherweight division.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Female Feather and Light - Ana Schmitt won Worlds at feather in 2019, but has submission losses to both Ffion and Bia Basilio in the last year. At light, Beatriz Mesquita is the queen.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Female Middle and Medium-Heavy - Ana Vieira looks primed to win a fourth straight at middleweight, but some new black belts could make it interesting. Medium-heavy will probably be a battle between three world champs.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Female Heavy and Super-Heavy - Nathiely is the P4P No. 1 and running things at heavyweight. Maybe Gabi Garcia comes back at super-heavyweight, but Gabi Pessanha and Yara Soares are a new generation at the weight.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Brown Belt - A look at all the big names at brown belt for 2020. The Munis bros are large and in charge at male; Jessa Khan should do some damage in the female divisions.

2020 Official Gi Season Preview: Purple Belt - All of the exciting athletes to watch this year, like Checkmats P4P number one Jansen Gomes.
